This restaurant is actually called La Tonalteca. I have both dined in and gotten take-out. The decor is cheerful and bright. The entryway is sort of clustered because the narrow walkway that leads you to the host station intersects with the busboy station and the opening to the kitchen. I think this is a design flaw in the restaurant, but it doesn't interfere much with the overall experience. Once you sit, the staff is quick, friendly, efficient and discreet. The first time I went, I was very please to see an entire vegetarian section - usually I have to comb through the entire menu. You are immediately presented with hot home-fried tortilla chips and amazing fresh salsa. As soon as you polish them off, the staff asks if you would like more. The food itself is consistently delicious. The only problem you sometimes encounter when getting take-out is that they often forget to give you any extra items that come with your dish such as tortillas or a cheese quesadilla. Just be sure to check before you leave with your take-out. I cannot speak for the alcoholic drinks since I have not tried them yet. This is absolutely my favorite restaurant in Rehoboth Beach, a town full of overrated and overpriced cuisine.

You would never think that Delaware would have good Mexican food. La Tolteca isn't the best Mexican food that I've had but heck, they're better than some Mexican restaurants in DC. I've been to this place 2 or 3 times and I've always gotten great service there. The staff are extremely friendly, prompt and professional. The food is good. Their margaritas are pretty good. You just MIGHt get a slight buzz on your first margarita. Have 2 or 3 and you'll be walking out feeling pretty good. This place is always packed. So, I suggest that you come during their off-peak hours. Otherwise, you will end up waiting for a table.

It was good standard Mexican fare, although I think we got better service because the waiter was into us. He gave us his number as we were leaving, and said he was going to show us a night on the town. The Chile relenos were yummy, I really liked the sauce, and they were just the right cheesy. They have nice decor, and are conviently located on Route 1. I've had better Mexican food, but we'll be back to try other dishes.

As you enter this stand-alone restaurant that looks like a former Pizza Hut, you are greeted by Mariachi band music overhead, with pinatas, maracas, and other South American nick-knacks lining the walls. Think of it as a Mexican take on Chili's Americana style of decor. Standard Mexican fare with friendly waiters. The food comes out so fast you think it may have been heated-up in a microwave, but, oh well. The chips and salsa are definitely fresh, and there is plenty of parking. Plus, there's a go-cart place behind the building, and a movie theater next door. So, if you at Rehoboth but want a day away from the water, you can have it all in one parking lot!

Good atmosphere. I've had a couple different dishes from carnitas, fajitas, burritos and all were very good. I'd recommend the carnitas with the jalapeño and a cold margarita of course. They also have pitchers of beer and/or margaritas. With the stop if you are in the area.

Came in here on Friday night of Labor Day weekend. The outside deck had plenty of open seats. Started off with a coconut margarita and a Pina Colada margarita. Both very good. Very creamy like made with ice cream. Had the combination platter which was a chicken burrito and beef taco with rice and beans. Bf and mom both had enchilada supreme entree's. Would come back here to avoid the crowds and for a nice cheap dinner.

We ran in for a late lunch/ early dinner. Our waitress was not very attentive. We sat for 10 minutes before she came over and just asked for our order before even getting us drinks. Throughout the meal she never checked up on us, so we had to drink sparingly in fear that we might not get a refill in a timely manner. The food was okay. We were happy with the portion size, because we were hungry. Not the best meal, but not the worst.

Highly recommend the Choriqueso as an appetizer, was awesome with the chips. Guacamole was good also. I ordered carnitas for my entree and it was very good. Tender, moist and well seasoned. Will definitely come back here next time in Rehoboth Beach.

This appears to be the same place as the "La Tonalteca", listed at the exact same address. I had a terrible experience here (see other review). The bland, runny salsa was from a jar, the flimsy chips from a chip warmer, and my entree, carnitas, a supposedly popular item, was improperly cooked and more fat than meat. The staff seems quite capable, but the food is absolutely awful. I don't understand the other reviews - this place has the worst mexican food I've ever had. It doesn't even seem like the same establishment. Perhaps it has changed hands? Anyway, have to warn people away from this place. Really bad.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican food La Tolteca is the place to go. I stopped in on the Friday before Memorial Day to place a take out order. I ordered a Strawberry Margarita on the rocks while I looked over the menu. The Margarita was delicious and it was only $5.99! If you love margaritas I would definitely recommend ordering one. After looking over the menu I decided on the Carne Asada tacos and they did not disappoint. They were STUFFED with meat. I have never had a taco that was stuffed with that much meat. The Pico de Gallo is amazing! My dinner also came with chips and refried beans all of that food for $9.95. My only complaint is that I didn't have the option for rice instead of beans. If you are looking for an inexpensive delicious meal and great margaritas, La Tolteca is your spot.

Pleasantly surprised. Food was good and good proportions for the money. I ordered stuffed jalepenos and cheese quesadillas... so good! Had fried ice cream for dessert. Yummy. Service was alright.

This is the best Mexican food in the area! The queso dip is excellent. The salsa fresh and chips warm. The fried chimichangas are great also. We are locals and eat here regularly. My husband always gets the fajitas and I always get the tacos de carne asado. It's chopped skirt steak and the hot sauce it comes with is awesome! Service is always quick and friendly. It is a must for excellent Mexican food!!

Went for late dinner on last night of vacation. Wife, daughter, and me. Wanted to go to El Dorado around the corner but it closed at 9pm. Was worried when we were seated and there seemed to be no wait staff. restaurant was lightly crowded. After we sat at least 3 other groups showed. After about a 5 minute wait someone brought us chips and salsa but no water or silverware. We reviewed the menu and I suggested we be ready to order as soon as our waiter appeared. It turned out the man who brought us the chips and salsa was the waiter. Only one for the entire outside seating area. He was busy. The salsa was good and spicy. Chips were OK but not great. After a short time our food arrived. I was pleasantly surprised at the speed in which it was delivered. Wife got the Enchilada Rancheras, daughter got Quesadilla Rellena with Chicken, and I had the Sampler dinner (lot of food!). Food was really good and very tasty. Enjoyed it. While the food was good the service lacked a certain professionalism. Little things like no silverware on table and no water shortly after we were seated and apparent short staffed nature of the wait staff detracted from what turned out to be very good food. I give them 4+ on the food and 3+ on the service for an average of 4. Not sure I will return but I still recommend it for the quality of the food.

There are a few of these in PA. But, I've never been to those. While visiting the Lewes area with family, stumbled into this place. The place was jam packed the night we went. Really noisy. Wait service was slow (primarily due to being super busy). The place wasn't really that clean. Food all over the floor. The whole decor seemed a bit cheesy. The food was just average. Nothing that wow'd us really. Just another chain restaurant along the coastal highway.....

We ate late so I only had a Margarita and the Tortilla Soup. Both were very good! My daughter had a Cheese Quesadilla and Sopapilla's. We were very happy and full, much better than the disapoointing CQ she had at El Dorado Restaurant. If we lived closer this would for sure be a regular stop!!

Very authentic. Had the grande sampler. Wife had chicken mole' Food comes out super fast and plates are hot. Presidente margarita is worth the money. Dinner is very reasonably priced. We come to RB this time every year and plan to make this place a tradition. Feliz Navidad!!

Man, I love me some La Tolteca. It's a chain, probably expanded beyond Delaware but I've only seen it at several locations in DE. I think been to all of them.. several times. I like the one in Rehoboth, as it's a nice location about 10 minutes from the business of the boardwalk. Which to me, means plenty of parking, and cheap prices! Service is also super laid back, as another reviewer said. But they're also very nice and patient with me as I take hours to decide on my meal, and my server in particular was very personable as well. I loved the review that described the restaurant as looking like a former Pizza Hut - so true. But that also means it has an open layout, making it great for groups and families. They also have an open bar, but I've never drank at this particular location so I can't comment on that. La Toltecas in general all have great food. Not fancy food; tasty food. It's not very creative at all, but I've never ever had a dish that I didn't like. Everything from enchiladas, burritos, really like their chiles rellenos and chimichangas. What's weird is that my favorite is probably one of their "speedy lunches" (a section on their menu that's like a lunch combo platter, like a Mexican version of a Chinese lunch combo platter - they take about five minutes to come out of the kitchen, and they're all like 6 dollars), scrambled eggs with chorizo. Comes with rice, beans, and fresh corn tortillas. I always get a side of the ranchero sauce that comes with the huevos rancheros. They always give me a funny look, but give it to me anyway. You should try it, soo good. And it's under 6 bucks, you cannot beat it. Or wait, maybe my favorite is their chile rellenos.. or maybe, dammit it's all good. So sad this place wasn't built when I was living here, I would have come in probably every day.

Tried this place based on other Yelp reviews. Glad we did. The portions were more than generous. The pork is amazing. Everything was tasty. While talking with the manager, we discovered that this is actually a chain. The restaurant does not feel like a chain at all. It was well worth the visit. We will eat here again.

It appears that I've been to more Toltecas than I thought. This was truly not one of the better ones. The service was slow, the margaritas weak, and the food forgettable. I regretted leaving the campground to eat here.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
